Opening the doors to Martha's House

My story....

I'm Rachel Foster, and I'm the founder of Martha's House.

I've worked in churches for almost 20 years helping people to grow and own their faith, as well as growing my own little family of husband and three kids. I created Martha's House for Christian women who sometimes feel like they just don't fit in church. I struggle with the unspoken pressures women face to fit into a particular box - pressures around marriage and singleness, sexuality, child bearing, career choices..... possibly even the way we dress. I know those pressures are real because they've been experienced by my friends, and by me.

If you're nodding along, then hello friend! You're not alone and this community is going to help you embrace your inner Martha (and maybe a little bit of Mary too)!

Why Martha?

Luke 10: 38-42, John 11: 1-44

We may only have two stories about Martha in the Bible, but I think we can read so much between the lines about her relationship with Jesus. She speaks to him in a familiar way, and even with anger when he doesn't arrive in time to heal her brother, Lazarus.

Of course, it's her sister Mary that we always remember for doing the 'right' thing.... sitting and listening at the feet of Jesus while Martha frantically catered for the needs of their guests.

In fact, both sisters were counter cultural. Maybe that's what drew Jesus to them. Mary sat in a man's place - at the feet of the master - instead of behaving as hospitality culture dictated. And Martha was a home owner, even though she had a brother - this was so rare for women at the time.

Both Mary and Martha are inspirational women to those of us wanting to follow Jesus, encourging us to spend time with him, as well as living strong, independent lives. If you feel inspired by them, I'd love you to join us in Martha's house as we journey together.

MY MISSION

Reclaim Your Journey: Love, Growth, and Belonging

Many women feel spiritually disconnected, longing for a church community that reflects their values and journey.

Whether it’s the isolation from having progressive theology, being LGBTQ+ affirming, or struggling with the pressures of modern life, many feel that traditional churches no longer serve them. Having walked this path of deconstructing my own faith and facing the trauma of exclusion, I now embrace an authentic faith that leaves room for both love and uncertainty. My mission is to inspire and guide women as they reclaim their faith, build meaningful community, and navigate the complexities of modern Christian life

Our Beliefs

Faith is a Journey

Faith is not a destination but a lifelong journey of exploration, growth, and transformation. Everyone's path is unique, and it's okay to ask questions and seek new understandings.

Inclusivity and Welcome

All individuals deserve to be heard, valued, and included in our community.
We reject exclusion and strive to create spaces that honour all identities and beliefs. We are affirming of the LGBTQ+ community.

Authenticity Matters

Being true to oneself is vital for spiritual growth. We encourage individuals to embrace their authentic selves, share their stories, and pursue faith that aligns with their values.

Questions are Welcome

Doubts and questions are not signs of weakness but opportunities for deeper understanding. We create a safe space for inquiry, discussion, and exploration of complex spiritual topics.

Personal Empowerment

Every individual has the potential to lead and make a difference. We believe in empowering women to reclaim their voices and take active roles in shaping their faith and communities.

Carina

"Rachel has helped me grow spiritually, both in my personal and professional life. Her inclusive theology is a breath of fresh air. She has a knack for getting to the heart of an issue and helping me put my thoughts in order."

Jackie

"The apostles remembered what many modern Christians tend to forget—that what makes the gospel offensive isn't who it keeps out but who it lets in."
